We’re sure that many people in the UK remember the “Tell Sid” adverts for the British Gas privatisation in the 90′s, however the The SID in this post stands for Senior Citizens, Income Supported People & Disabled People.

Not enough SID’S know about the social tariffs for gas and electricity consumers, so it is up to us all to “tell them”.

It is estimated that over 4.5 million people who should be on a social fuel tariff are not currently claiming what they could because people are not signed up to the tariff automatically and actually have to apply to their current energy provider for the discounts.

The chances are you know someone who should be, but are not claiming. If any of your friends or family fit the following criteria then “tell them” or even do it for them.

If they are in receipt of child tax credit or working tax credit and their salary is below £14,600 “tell them”

When the focus is on how much energy bills have risen and how much they are set to rise again it seems that tens of thousands of people are still with energy providers that are charging them to much for their home or indeed business gas and electricity.

On one hand consumers will grumble that the price of fuel seems to be rising every year but on the other hand “some” will refuse to do anything to help themselves.

A common reason given when asked why someone has not changed to a new energy supplier is “they all raise their prices at the same time“.

Though most providers will increase (or lower) the price of fuel in line with their competitors, what most people do not realise is that although 1+1 should allways add up to 2, the full answer in actual terms can sometimes produce quite different results as explained in the following example.

A is charged £1000 a year for gas and electricity and his/her energy provider raises its price by 15%, this means the expected cost next year will be a hefty £1150 (not including VAT)

B lives next door to A but is with a rival supplier who is currently charging only £900 for exactly the same energy use (£100 a year less). B’s energy provider also decides to put it’s prices up by 15% which means that the expected cost to B for the following year would be £1035.

So though A & B’s energy suppliers did raise the price of their gas and electricity by the same percentage, B is now actually paying £115 a year less than A.

The maths may be simple, but the message could not be clearer … Do not let the recent price rises put you off changing your Home Energy or Business Energy to a less costly provider !!

The new increase in fuel prices means that the energy giant has put up its tariffs twice this year.

EON also put up it’s electricity prices by 9% and gas prices by 3% on the 4th of February this year which means a TOTAL rise of a whopping 21.1% in gas & 20.4% in electricity prices during 2011.

In one answer to a question about the wholesale prices actually being higher in 2008, the companies Managing Director, Graham Bartlett said

It’s true, they (the prices) were or rather, the peaks were (higher). But we have to look at trends, rather than peaks and troughs and since then, the trend has been steadily upward that have been made much worse by events in Japan, Libya and Egypt
