It has been reported that grocery basket prices in Britain have risen by 2.8% in January 2010, the highest monthly rise for two years.
This means that the amount an “average family” will pay for their grocery bill will rise by around £6.00 per month. It is believed that the rise is mainly due to the end of the UK VAT price cut and the end of seasonal discounts.
However, it should be noted that unless your grocery basket is full of booze and *supposed luxury non vat exempt food (see below), then you should not neccesarily be effected by this “supposed” rise in the cost of your groceries.
*Food and drink for human consumption is, in general, zero-rated but many items are standard-rated, including alcoholic drinks, confectionery, crisps and savoury snacks, food for catering or hot takeaways, ice cream, soft drinks and mineral water.
