It was announced today that 270,000 laptop computers will be given free to families on low incomes between now and March 2011.
Under the UK Governments home access scheme they will provide a grant for either a free computer, free broadband and free support to familes who receive income support or low income benefits. Depending on what the family actually needs they will qualify for some or all of the following:
1. Full package (a computer, one year’s internet access, service and support)
2. A computer with service and support
3. One year’s internet access
The £300 Million tax payer funded scheme follows 2 successful pilot schemes in Oldham and Suffolk when more than 12,000 grants were given to low income families and now another 270,000 families are to receive the same opportunity.
